MERCEDES GARCIA BACHMANN, ARGETINIAN BIBLICIST WAS AMONG US

Throughout the week 2’6 February, the Argentinean Lutheran Pastor, Mercedes Garcia Bachmann, Doctor of Theology, a specialist in Old Testament and professor at the University Institute ISEDET, was among us to teach an intensive course on Wisdom Literature, on the Bachelor and Mastery Program.

The books of Job, Ecclesiastes, Psalms, Proverbs, Esther and Ruth were the subjects of this course. She wanted to speak about them: “there are books in the Bible which are very familiar to people but all books are important. I am very interested in Ecclesiastes, the Psalms and Proverbs. These books concentrate about the concerns of the world worries, as the pain, the reward, the search of the wisdom, the question: what we work for and not only for the Israelites, so they are very valid today. Some of these books are not studied enough today, like Ruth and Esther. This is so, not because of the books in themselves, but because of the way the biblical courses are focused. Ruth has much to do with the issue of the poverty, the hunger, the migrations and the unaccompanied women who must search for a living. The book of Esther is related to the power and to gain access to it. The Psalms deals with the every-day feelings. It is also one of the most quoted books in the New Testament.

Professor Bachmann also participated as a guest at Adolfo Ham’s course to approach Luther. She also contributed as a consultant in a Diploma work at SET. She wanted to add that “I am very happy because the students and professors wanted to approach these books of the Bible and that there is much contact between our faculties. It is important for Cuba to know that it is not alone in this struggle, that although it has a very particular situation about the blockade, all the area has very hard social, economic and religious challenges. Some of the answers are in these studied books”, she concluded.

80TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAMILO TORRES RESTREPO’S BIRTHDAY

The reflection and solidarity group “Oscar Arnulfo Romero”, together with the Memorial Center Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Center of Studies of the Cuban Council of Churches (CECIC) and the Evangelical Seminary of Theology (SET), with the support the National Office of the Martiana Organization of Solidarity; the Foundation of the New Latin American Movies and Organization of Solidarity with people of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAL) summoned to a conference from 3 to 15 February, in order to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Camilo Torres Restrepo,a Colombian guerrillero, priest, sociologist and university professor.

The aim of these working days was to try to remember his life, his tireless struggle for social justice and the human freedom as an indispensable way to the peace and to think about his coherent ecumenical vocation, his messages to diverse social sectors an his concept of “effective love”.

Many activities were programmed during this congress. Among them: a theological workshop on the concept “effective love” taking place on Monday, February 9th at SET, with a panel constituted by the theologian Dr Sergio Arce Martinez, Bachelor Raquel Suarez Rodes, Pastor of Ebenezer church, in Marianao and the Argentinean priest Alberto Montiel (oblate), missionary in Yaguajay. The panelists approached the “effective love” in Camilo Torres from different experiences: Arce, from the theological implications of the concept; Raquel, from her generation, expressed the meaning and the contextualization of the concept; Alberto, from the articulation with the Liberation Theology and the Popular Culture. This was a real good conference at SET, with three different views which were enriched with the questions of the present people and final debate.

ANNUAL THEOLOGICAL CONFERENCE AT SET

The annual theological conference was celebrated at SET on past 12 to 14 February. This time with the participation of the renowned Irish Theologian bubbliest John Dominic Crossan and some guests from Canada. Among them, Rev. David Giuliano, moderator of the United Church of Canada and the Pastor Chris Levan from the Wilmot United Church congregation, in Fredericton, Ontario. The crowded delegation of Canadian professors and students of Theology from the Saint Thomas University, also from Fredericton, came together with the lecturers joined to professors and students of the SET. This was an opportunity to discuss with Grossan –nowadays, one of the most important exponents of the Christian thought, from the biblical and theological perspective; of the most urgent challenges which believers face in a world which has a common womb, with different situations. Themes as “peace and violence”, “justice and distribution”, “justice and retribution” were central. The academic stated that “we use to see God as retributive –he gives in the same proportion of what you do. The retributive justice is the one of there sin, of the punishment, of the repentance and the searching of the God’s forgiveness. The west culture has distorted the Christian world of justice and peace and that leads to conceive a violent God that matches with a violent society, instead of relationships of harmony and justice.

“Among the different kinds of justice in the Bible, there are also there is the distributive justice and the retributive justice. The first one refers to the delivery, is a sort of justice of equality, the bread is given to the poor, to the sick people and to the outcasts And the second one consists in the return of the original rights. We can not separate the justice from the love. That is a Christianity error. We have tended to separate them, but the justice without love is brutality and it is just banality.

To the question about this subject, Professor Grossan answered that “I turn nervous when someone speak about peace and justice, because the order should be: first justice and as a result of it, the peace. The justice comes first. For the Roman, peace came first. Peace meant the victory and the victory meant war.”

INTEGRATION OF EXPERIENCES: DORCAS GORDON AND A GROUP OF YOUNG PEOPLE AT SET

The Canadian theologian Dorcas Gordon and a group of young people from the Knox College of Canada came to the SET from 16 to 20 February, together with a group of young people who are studying at the Faculty. They came from different denomination and countries and from different ages.

The theologian Dorcas has been a friend of SET for fifteen years. In this occasion she wanted to share here experience: “we are passing this week in Cuba doing an integration based on different experiences. We have had lectures by professors of Havana University. We went to the Book Fair and to a workship at the Reformed-Presbyterian church in Luyano. Here, in Matanzas, we visited the university and familiarized with the life at the seminary; we shared classes taught by professors of the SET, the folk dances and some parties in the evening. It has been very important for us to participate in the project of the Episcopal Church at Cuatro Esquinas. In general we could learn about the churches and the academic life in Cuba. This make larger the perception of what a mission is, of the ecumenical work and the participation of the church in justice and social action.

The economist Haan taught a course of “Economy and Theology: basically concepts to interpret the economic reality and the theologian perspective” and Doctor Wirth approached the subject “Religion and religiosities in the Reform context”.

Dr Haan spoke about her course, “it is necessary to search for an own logic for the popular economy, instead of a capital logic, I mean from the experiences the people have.”

“This course –stated Wirth- help to establish the relionship between Theology and faith with the social changes of the moment and its implications for the present, over all for Latin America. The proterstant Theology gives answers to the concerns of its time as the concerns of our time change. Then, we have to re-elaborate our Theologies”

INTERVIEWS BARBARA BRAVER

When I first came to the Seminary in 2006 for a visit of less than a day I had no idea that I would ever return, and that the paths and trees, the buildings and the gardens, would become familiar to me and that the Seminary would feel like my second home.  In 2006 I came to S.E.T. as part of a group accompanying Bishop Frank Griswold, who was the 25th Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church.  During those days I served as his Assistant for Communication.

I was delighted when he received an invitation from the Rector to come back to the Seminary both last year and this year to teach and I was invited to come along and assist.  I have much enjoyed taking part in the life of the Seminary and, most of all, coming to know the students, faculty, staff and all of the people who make up the community of the Seminary.

During the last month Bishop Griswold gave lectures both to Anglican students and to the Seminary community.  He also visited and preached in various churches and, at the invitation of Bishop Miguel Tamayo, gave a retreat for the clergy of the Episcopal Diocese of Cuba.

We were very happy with the election of Barack Obama as President of the United States and are anticipating an improvement in the relations of the United States and Cuba.  The Episcopal Church continues to work with other churches in the United States for the lifting of the blockade, and Bishop Griswold has frequently spoken out against it.  During this past month we have talked to many Cubans and know that they share our hopes for the future, and rejoice with us about our new President.

Meanwhile, we have made great bonds of friendship during our time here Cuba.   We believe such personal relationships enrich us, as we learn how Christ is acting in the lives of our sisters and brothers in Cuba.

Barbara Braver served the Episcopal Church as Assistant to the Presiding Bishop for Communication for 18 years during the terms of two Presiding Bishops.   Prior to that she was Director of Communication for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts with responsibility for the diocesan newspaper as well as other audiovisual communication and media relations.  Her university education was in English and journalism and she has worked for secular newspapers and non-profits corporations.  She continues to work as an editor and writer and to give lectures and retreats.  Most recently, along with Bishop Griswold, she gave an Advent retreat at the Cathedral College of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.  She is active as a member of the Fellowship of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (a monastic community based in Cambridge, Massachusetts) and serves as co-chair for their capital campaign.  She and her husband, Alan, have two grown children and a grandson.
